New outpatient rehab in Mount Pleasant

Arbor Court, a skilled nursing facility in Mount Pleasant, is proud to announce their newest outpatient rehab program! Due to high demand, Arbor Court now offers outpatient rehabilitation services for non-resident patients in the Mount Pleasant community. With the help of Reliant Rehabilitation, this new program is open for anyone seeking affordable, high-quality rehab.

When asked what sparked the idea to open Arbor Court for outpatient rehab, Mitchell Boeck, Director of Rehab at Reliant Rehabilitation, stated that current skilled nursing residents enjoy their therapy programs and notice significant benefits. Once residents are ready to return home, they often wish they could continue with Arbor Court’s therapists. Now when a residential rehab patient is discharged, they can continue their therapy with the same familiar faces.

Why choose Arbor Court?

With access to the same facilities and equipment as residential rehab patients, outpatients at Arbor Court still reap the full benefits of speech, physical, and occupational therapies. All patients are welcome, including, but not limited to:

Former residents who return home but require further therapy after discharge

Community members who do not meet the requirements for skilled nursing care but still need therapy to continue with their everyday lives.

As a skilled nursing facility, Arbor Court specializes in quality care for all who need it. Alongside the team at Reliant Rehabilitation, these healthcare professionals know how to care for their patients and get them back to their highest possible quality of living.

The Arbor Court outpatient rehab experience

Arbor Court partners with Reliant Rehabilitation and their excellent team of therapists to provide the highest quality of care. The outpatient therapy program allows residents who have returned home to continue therapy with known and trusted therapists.

When you arrive for your outpatient rehab appointment, you will park in one of the reserved outpatient parking spots. Friendly, familiar faces wait inside the outpatient rehab entrance to greet you. You will head to the fully equipped therapy gym, which is shared by both outpatients and residents.

Before beginning your therapy session, you will update your therapist on current function and bring up any questions or issues that have come up since your last visit. Your therapist will take appropriate interventions based on your personalized plan of care and treatment. Former residents are always welcome to stay and visit with friends from your stay with skilled nursing.

To learn more about outpatient rehabilitation at Arbor Court, give them a call at 319-385-1400 or schedule a tour online.

“The two most important days in your life are the day you’re born and the day you find out why.” – Mark Twain

Kristin Pauley was born to care for others; she’s known this since the beginning of her career. This past Summer, in the midst of a covid-19 outbreak, the Oakland Community came to know this as well.

Answering the Call

July 20, 2020 is a day Kristin Pauley will never forget. While working as The Director of Rehabilitation at Oakland Manor Care Center, Kristin found herself facing a covid-19 outbreak. She called her husband and told him to pack a bag of her clothing and essentials, then bring it along with their family camper up to Oakland Manor.

The weeks leading up to July 20 were a blur for Kristin. In addition to still seeing her Physical Therapy patients, she was working around-the-clock to support her team in every way possible. From assisting the Oakland Nursing Staff and handling administrative duties, to doing endless loads of laundry, housekeeping, and dietary work, Kristin never failed to answer the call.

“Twenty-seven days. That’s how long I lived in my camper, parked right outside Oakland Manor.” – Kristin Pauley

In This Together

Being apart from her home, husband, and two young children for nearly a month was draining. In fact, the most difficult part of Kristin’s journey was the heartbreaking feeling of being away from her family. Kristin saw her family as often as possible via video chat, keeping them with her every step of the way.

Though separated from her family, Kristin grew closer than ever to her team at Oakland Manor. They were in this together, they were a family.

While living in her camper, Kristin’s co-workers planned many surprises to keep her spirits lifted, including plenty of visits from furry friends. However, the best and biggest surprise of all was executed by Kristin’s husband, BJ, and the Oakland Manor BOM, KeNeisha: a surprise outdoor picnic.

Dressed head-to-toe in PPE, BJ waited by a picnic table with flowers, ready to hug his heroic bride.

“It was extremely exhausting… one of the hardest, but most rewarding, things I’ve ever done.” – Kristin Pauley

Love Leads the Way at Bettendorf

The Season of Covid-19 swooped into our lives in March of 2020, and unfortunately, has decided to stick around for a while. With the impact of Covid-19 being so great on the geriatric population, we’ve been guided by the CDC to implement precautions to protect our residents from possible exposure. In order to do this, on March 14, 2020 residents and families were notified of new guidelines that would impact how and when visitations would occur going forward.

Bettendorf Health Care Center, like all of the facilities with MGM, implemented a no visitor policy, meaning our doors would be locked, and visitors would not be allowed in until further notice.

Nearly five months have passed since the implementation of these new safety standards, and our staff and resident family members have gotten very creative, coming up with unique ways to stay connected in the midst of Covid. From video conference calls and window visits to pen pal programs and fun facility-wide games, they’ve done all they can to keep everyone as close as possible.

The dear husband of one of our residents, Nicole, stepped up his creativity and came up with a wonderful solution to stay connected to his wife.

Meet Nicole & Kari

Their love story began in the early 1970’s when they met in college nearly 50 years ago. Nicole was from Bulgaria, studying to become a Chemical Engineer, and Kari was from Syria, working towards his Mechanical Engineering degree. They bonded immediately and have been inseparable ever since. In 1973, the two were married.

After marrying, Kari and Nicole’s family grew. Together, they raised two incredible sons who are both now physicians. In 1999, they sent their sons to America for college, then in 2003, Kari and Nicole brought their love to America too. Their family was once again whole as they were reunited with their adult children. In 2008, they became US citizens.

Their love has made it all around the world!

Thinking Outside the Box

Covid has been extremely difficult for this sweet and loving couple to cope with. Being apart from your other half can be lonely and isolating, however, Kari has refused to let anything keep him from his beautiful bride.

Kari saw that Bettendorf was hiring for part-time aides in their Housekeeping Department. He immediately met with the Bettendorf team and proposed the idea of him joining the team on a part-time basis, so that he could be near Nicole and visit her after his shifts. Nobody could deny this brilliant, lovely idea. Kari’s love for Nicole is so beautiful and true.

The Sweetest Surprise

The day Kari was hired, Nicole was given the surprise of a lifetime! The Bettendorf staff went into her room and told her they’d just hired a new employee and wanted to introduce her. Much to her surprise, the “new employee” was her Kari. Her eyes filled with happy tears and face was all aglow as he walked in, wearing his new Bettendorf Health Care uniform.

Since starting his new job at Bettendorf, Kari’s days have been so much brighter, and Nicole looks so forward to visits with her sweetheart after his shifts.

When love is involved, there’s always a way. For Kari and Nicole, their love story is the kind that never ends.

Nestled in the heart of Adel, Iowa, Adel Acres is home to 34 very special residents. From the moment you walk in the door, a sense of warmth greets you, welcoming you home. The staff at Adel Acres strives to make every day special for their residents – even in the midst of a global pandemic.

“Keeping spirits high can be a challenge when the residents are missing interaction with their loved ones. We’re always thinking up creative ways to keep everyone connected, while also staying safely apart,” explained Admissions Manager, Tom Harmsen.

Horsing Around at Adel Acres!

It was a picture-perfect day in May when the residents of Adel Acres were greeted with the sweetest surprise: Louw Stables was in their own backyard!

Owner of Louw Stables, Jennifer Louw, toured William the horse, Lucy the pony, and Kabous, the pony-riding-pup, around the entire exterior of Adel Acres. The trio stopped at every window, peeking in to greet each resident with a friendly “hello.” Residents were beyond thrilled to see such a fun and unexpected sight from their bedroom windows; tears of joy were shed by all!

“Sharing this surprise with our residents is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever gotten to be apart of. This was just so beautiful to see,” said Harmsen.

The Beauty of Animal Therapy

Under regular conditions, Adel Acres is a huge supporter of animal and pet therapy at their facility. Even without direct interaction, simply seeing an animal through a window releases those same “feel-good” endorphins, proven to help with stress, depression, and anxiety.

Another benefit of animal therapy is cognitive health. Seeing and interacting with an animal often brings up feelings of nostalgia and distant memories. In fact, resident Norma Webb, was so moved after seeing a pony appear in her bedroom window, she shared a sweet story from her childhood, and the many fond memories she had growing up around ponies and horses.

“I love horses and ponies! I rode a pony about two miles from our home to the pavement they had back then. And then, some of the kids would come down and pick me up to take me to school. I’d get off school, and then ride back on my pony!” – Norma Webb, Adel Acres Resident.

Giving Back to The Community

In addition to William, Lucy, and Kabous, Ms. Emily Gibson was also in attendance! Emily is the daughter of Jennifer Louw and is currently reigning as your 2020 Dallas County Iowa Miss United States Agriculture.

As a pillar of the community, Emily works with local businesses to give back to Dallas County. Keeping the residents of Adel Acres close to her heart, Emily reached out to The Earl May Garden Center to coordinate a generous donation: a potted plant for each and every resident to keep in their room.

It truly was a beautiful day at Adel Acres.

“While some days are better than others, many are struggling with feelings of loneliness and isolation right now. Simple, kind gestures – even the smallest ones – inspire feelings of hope and positivity. We’re just so thankful for our community,” said Harmsen.
